Wayne Herbert Bird Carvings
Based in Inglewood, New Zealand, I hand carve life size birds and fish from a block of wood into unique, detailed, original works of art.
In New Zealand we have many native and imported timbers to choose from, but I find the ones I have used, not suitable to achieve the detail required.
My preferred wood is Tupelo which I import from the USA . It is a very stable, lite, and strong wood that allows fine detail to be carved, and texture burned with pyrography pens to replicate fine feathers.
Following the carving and texturing, acrylic paint is used to bring the subject to life and complete the carving process.
